NSF - SBIR/STTR Phase I Program

The program aims to support small businesses and startups across the United States in developing broad technologies that have potential for both societal and economic impacts. This initiative enhances technological innovation and commercialization of new ideas to solve national and global challenges, promoting economic growth and job creation.

• Research and Development (R&D) projects focusing on scientific and engineering discoveries.
• Projects aimed at the commercialization of innovative technologies.
• Technological innovation projects that are expected to lead to new products, processes, or services.

• Costs associated with research and development.
• Prototyping and testing phases.
• Customer discovery and market validation activities.

• Maximum Funding Per Company: $305.000, inclusive of all direct and indirect costs, plus a small business fee.
• Technical and Business Assistance (TABA) Funding: Up to $6.500 to assist in commercialization activities.
• Optional I-Corps Training: Budget should include $25.000 for I-Corps training to enhance potential for commercial success.

• Must be a U.S.-based small business with fewer than 500 employees, including affiliates.
• For-profit entities only.
• Applicants must have a commitment to developing potentially transformative innovations.
• Must receive an official invitation via the Project Pitch process to submit a full proposal.
