Climate simulations data and knowledge for optimal support of IPCC Assessments and International Policy
30.000.000€
Description
The main goal of this opportunity is to support the creation of reliable climate projections and simulations that inform decision-making and policy, especially for international climate assessments. It aims to help institutions access up-to-date climate projections under various future scenarios, including those that align with the Paris Agreement. The opportunity focuses on improving Earth System Models, designing simulations based on socio-economic scenarios, assessing the risks of exceeding warming targets, coordinating climate science efforts, and enhancing infrastructure for delivering both global and regional climate projections. International cooperation is encouraged, with a special focus on including countries from the Global South. This grant is part of the Horizon Europe Programme and is dedicated to advancing climate simulations and knowledge for global policy support.
Admissible Projects
- Projects must focus on generating scientifically robust climate projections or simulations.
- They should address at least one of the following: improving Earth System Models, designing climate simulations based on socio-economic scenarios, or assessing warming overshoot risks.
- Proposals must coordinate or involve climate science communities and enhance infrastructure for climate projections.
- International collaboration, particularly with institutions from the Global South, is strongly encouraged.
- Applications must follow the specified page limits and layout in the official application form.
- Projects must be submitted by eligible countries or organizations with arrangements for Horizon Europe participation.
Examples:
- A project developing new software tools to improve climate model accuracy and making them available to research teams in Africa and Asia.
- An initiative that brings together European and Latin American scientists to simulate regional climate impacts under various socio-economic scenarios.
- A partnership between universities and research centers to assess the risks of temperature overshoot and provide open-access data to policymakers.
Eligible Expenses
- Lump sum contributions for project activities
- Grants to individual researchers from Global South countries (up to EUR 60,000 per person)
- Training activities for early career researchers from the Global South
- Software development and purchase
- Acquisition or adaptation of data and modeling tools
- Costs for adapting models to High-Performance Computing environments
- Infrastructure improvements (up to 30% of the total eligible costs)
- Personnel costs related to project implementation
- Travel and networking expenses for international cooperation
- Dissemination and open access publication costs
Restrictions: Financial support to individual third parties is limited to EUR 60,000 each. The total for activities such as training Global South researchers must not exceed EUR 1,000,000. Infrastructure costs cannot exceed 30% of the total eligible budget.
