Modelling of mitigation pathways for F-gases
Up to 3.000.000€
Description
The main goal of this opportunity is to enhance knowledge and modelling capacity related to the use of Ozone Depleting Substances and Fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases), especially in the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump sectors. It aims to develop regional strategies to reduce F-gas use and emissions, evaluate how these efforts interact with the decarbonisation of the energy system, and support the implementation of international agreements on climate protection. The focus is on transitioning to natural refrigerants, improving energy efficiency, exploring alternatives to F-gases, and examining the impact on emissions of substances such as PFAS. This grant covers projects globally, distinguishing between countries under different classifications of the Montreal Protocol, and further considers regional differences such as climate conditions.
Admissible Projects
- Projects must address the use and mitigation of F-gases in refrigeration, air conditioning, or heat pump sectors.
- They should propose regional or global pathways for reducing F-gas emissions.
- Proposals must consider the interaction with energy system decarbonisation.
- Projects should include assessment or implementation of natural refrigerants or F-gas-free alternatives.
- They must account for geographic and climate-related differences between regions.
- Projects should ensure open access to any new modules, models, or tools developed.
Example projects:
- Developing a model to compare F-gas emissions in heat pumps across different climate zones.
- Designing a regional roadmap for phasing out F-gases in commercial refrigeration in Southeast Asia.
- Assessing the energy efficiency impact of switching to natural refrigerants in urban air conditioning systems.
Eligible Expenses
- Personnel costs for researchers and project staff
- Development of new software modules, models, or simulation tools
- Data collection and analysis related to F-gas use and emissions
- Equipment and materials necessary for research activities
- Workshops, stakeholder engagement, and dissemination events
- Travel expenses for project-related activities
- Costs for ensuring open access to project outputs
- Subcontracting specific tasks or services
- Project management and administrative support
Restriction: All costs must fit within the lump sum funding model as defined by Horizon Europe, and outputs must be openly accessible.
