Description

The main goal of this opportunity is to explore how quantum sensing and computing can improve Air Traffic Management (ATM). It aims to assess cybersecurity and cryptographic needs, create a plan for introducing post-quantum cryptography, and investigate quantum key distribution for secure communications. The research also focuses on using quantum computing to tackle complex ATM challenges like trajectory optimization and emergency response. Additionally, it seeks to develop quantum sensing solutions for high-precision navigation and alternative systems to improve air navigation resilience and accuracy. The opportunity is open to eligible countries as defined in the Horizon Europe Programme, with some non-EU countries also able to participate if they meet specific provisions.

Admissible Projects

  • Use quantum computing to improve trajectory, traffic flow, or separation management.

  • Apply quantum methods to emergency or contingency scenarios.

  • Use quantum for faster training of AI/ML models.

  • Explore quantum-enhanced reinforcement learning.

  • Assess quantum computing for climate or environmental modelling.

  • Use quantum tech for drone detection and classification.

  • Identify suitable quantum algorithms or techniques for ATM use cases.

  • Define a roadmap for post-quantum cryptography (PQC) in ATM.

  • Adapt existing PQC research to ATM needs.

  • Explore transition to Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).

  • Study quantum sensing for alternative navigation (A-PNT).

  • Improve navigation resilience without GNSS.

  • Explore datalink impacts of quantum sensing.

  • Propose other quantum sensing use cases in ATM with clear justification.

Examples:

  • A project developing quantum cryptography solutions for secure ATM communications across European airports.
  • A consortium using quantum computing to optimize flight paths and reduce congestion in busy airspaces.
  • A research group designing quantum sensors for backup navigation systems in case of GPS failure.

Eligible Expenses

  • Personnel costs for researchers and project staff
  • Equipment and materials needed for quantum sensing and computing experiments
  • Software and licensing fees for quantum computing platforms
  • Travel and accommodation for project meetings and collaboration
  • Subcontracting specific research or technical tasks
  • Costs for communication, dissemination, and exploitation of results
  • Training and capacity-building activities
  • Project management and administrative expenses
  • Networking and stakeholder engagement events
  • Other costs directly linked to project objectives

Note: All expenses are covered by a lump sum payment, and individual costs are not reimbursed separately. Expenses must align with the grant agreement and project objectives.
