Description

The main goal of this opportunity is to advance sufficiency measures in the built environment, focusing on reducing the demand for energy, materials, land, water, and other natural resources. It aims to optimize the use of vacant and under-utilized spaces, buildings, and infrastructures to lower the need for new construction. The initiative seeks to reduce resource consumption, carbon emissions, and environmental impacts, while promoting well-being within planetary boundaries. Projects are expected to address non-technical barriers, deepen understanding of sufficiency measures' impacts, and integrate circular economy principles. Proposals must be tested in at least three neighborhoods located in urban, peri-urban, and rural areas across at least three different Member States or Associated Countries.

Admissible Projects

  • Proposals must follow specific page limits and layout requirements.
  • Projects must involve eligible countries, with at least three neighborhoods in urban, peri-urban, and rural areas across at least three Member States or Associated Countries.
  • Applicants must demonstrate financial and operational capacity.
  • Projects must be evaluated based on set criteria and processes.
  • Each project must test and validate ways to map and quantify vacant or under-utilized spaces with high sufficiency potential.
  • At least two sufficiency measures must be tested and quantified for their impact on reducing floor space and resource demand.
  • At least 0.2% of the total budget must be used to share results with the "New European Bauhaus hub for results and impact."
  • Social Sciences and Humanities experts must be involved to enhance societal impact.

Example projects:

  • Transforming vacant office spaces in a city, a suburban area, and a rural village to affordable housing while reducing new construction needs.
  • Mapping and reusing under-utilized public buildings in three different countries to create community centers with minimal new materials.
  • Testing two different sufficiency measures—such as shared workspaces and adaptive reuse of industrial sites—in three diverse neighborhoods to measure reductions in energy and material use.
