Leveraging multimodal data to advance Generative Artificial Intelligence applicability in biomedical research (GenAI4EU)
Up to 17.000.000€
Description
The main goal of this opportunity is to accelerate the development and application of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) models in biomedical research, with an emphasis on predictive and personalized medicine. It aims to provide researchers with reliable, trustworthy, and ethical AI tools to synthesize scientific information and large-scale, multimodal data. The focus areas include creating or adapting Generative AI models using high-quality data, developing proof-of-concept cases in predictive and personalized medicine, and ensuring the models align with human values and ethical standards. This opportunity is open to entities in eligible countries, including the United States, under the Horizon Europe program.
Admissible Projects
-
Must develop or repurpose Generative AI models using large-scale multimodal biomedical data
-
Must include at least two predictive and personalised medicine use cases across different medical fields
-
Must assess models with robust methodologies addressing performance, explainability, bias, ethics and legal aspects
-
Must demonstrate involvement of EU-based AI developers and promote open-source, FAIR, and GDPR-compliant approaches
-
Must involve SSH expertise and multidisciplinary collaboration, with engagement of end users in development and testing
-
Must budget for collaboration and joint activities with other funded projects under the topic
Example projects:
- Developing a new Generative AI model to predict disease progression using anonymized patient imaging and genetic data.
- Repurposing an existing AI model to personalize drug recommendations for rare diseases, ensuring data privacy and ethical compliance.
- Creating a proof-of-concept AI tool that synthesizes multimodal research data to support clinical decision-making in oncology, involving end users in the design process.
Eligible Expenses
- Personnel costs for researchers and project staff
- Costs for data acquisition and management
- Software development and licensing fees
- Equipment and hardware necessary for AI model development
- Training and workshops for project participants
- Travel and meeting expenses for project collaboration
- Costs for dissemination and communication activities
- Budget for joint activities and networking with other projects
- Expenses related to ethical and legal compliance (e.g., data protection assessments)
Restrictions may apply as detailed in the Horizon Europe Work Programme General Annexes and specific call documentation.
