Description

The main goal is to support outstanding research leaders with a proven record of achievements in their field. This opportunity funds bold, ambitious, and feasible research projects that push the boundaries of knowledge. The focus is on scientific excellence, both in the proposed research and in the leadership and creativity of the applicant. Researchers from any country can apply, provided their project is carried out in an EU Member State or Associated Country. The program welcomes proposals from all scientific disciplines.

Admissible Projects

  • Proposals must be complete, readable, and include all required sections.
  • Only eligible Principal Investigators may submit proposals, and these must be submitted before the deadline.
  • The project must align with the objectives and grant type set by the ERC for this call.
  • The Principal Investigator must commit at least 30% of their working time to the ERC project and at least 50% of their working time in an EU Member State or Associated Country.
  • The Host Institution must be based in an EU Member State, Associated Country, or an eligible European research organization.

Examples:

  • A senior researcher in genetics proposes a novel study on gene editing, hosted by a university in France.
  • A renowned physicist from the US submits a project on quantum computing, planning to spend over half their working time in Germany.
  • An experienced social scientist based in Brazil partners with a research center in Spain to investigate migration patterns, ensuring all proposal parts are complete and submitted on time.

Eligible Expenses

  • General project costs covered by a lump sum grant
  • Start-up costs for Principal Investigators relocating to the EU or an Associated Country
  • Purchase of major research equipment
  • Access fees for large research facilities
  • Major experimental costs
  • Fieldwork expenses
  • Open access publishing fees (only for fully open access venues)
  • Other significant one-off costs directly related to the project

All funding requests are reviewed during evaluation. Additional funding for one-off costs is not reduced for shorter projects.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to Principal Investigators of any nationality, residing anywhere at the time of application
  • PIs must spend at least 50% of their working time in an EU Member State or Associated Country and at least 30% on the ERC project
  • The Host Institution must be established in an EU Member State, Associated Country, or an eligible European research organization
  • Any type of legal entity, public or private, can act as Host Institution
  • PIs and their teams must be hosted and supported by the Host Institution for the full project duration
  • Proposals must be complete, readable, and submitted before the deadline
  • Proposals must include all required sections: Administrative Form, Extended Synopsis, CV, Scientific Proposal, Budget, and Host Institution Binding Statement of Support
  • Projects must align with the objectives and grant type of this ERC call
