Description

This opportunity aims to provide financial support for the registration and valorization of industrial property. The goal is to enhance technological development and foster connections with higher education institutions, research centers, and companies. By strengthening the transfer of scientific and technological knowledge to businesses, it seeks to improve the innovation and research system's effectiveness.

Admissible Projects

Projects must focus on the registration and protection of intellectual or industrial property rights, and include one or more of the following actions:

  • Filing national applications for patents, utility models, or designs with INPI Portugal

  • Submitting direct international applications to foreign intellectual property offices, with or without claiming Portuguese priority

  • Filing European patent applications, either via INPI or directly through the European Patent Office (EPO), with Portuguese priority

  • Submitting PCT international patent applications, provided they enter national or regional phase as part of the same project

  • Filing Community design applications with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO)

 

Examples of Eligible Projects

  • Submitting a national patent application for a medical device to INPI, followed by an international filing via the PCT route

  • Filing a European patent application for a software-based energy optimization system

  • Registering designs and trademarks for an innovative packaging line in both Portugal and Spain

Eligible Expenses

  • Official fees and charges for filing, examination, and granting of:

    • Patents

    • Utility models

    • Industrial designs

  • Professional service fees for:

    • Legal or technical consultants preparing and submitting protection requests

    • Translators (when required for international filings)

    • IP representatives or attorneys involved in the process

  • Related administrative costs, including:

    • Expenses for certified accountants or official auditors validating reimbursement claims

    • Documentation and procedural support costs directly linked to the protection process

Financial Information

  • Total budget for the grant: 2,825,000€
  • Co-financing percentage: Up to 50%

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for this funding, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be a micro, small, or medium-sized enterprise (SME) or a small mid-cap company (up to 499 employees).

  • Ensure that the operation:

    • Does not significantly harm environmental objectives (DNSH principle)

    • Aligns with the strategic priorities of the national or regional RIS3 strategy (e.g., innovation, digital, green)

  • Present a certified interim balance sheet (if required) to confirm financial capacity.

  • Have a maximum project duration of 36 months, unless a longer period is duly justified and approved
